AutoUP, Scan for Software and Windows updates

 

Keeping track of all installed programs and updates that get released for them can be quite the difficulty task. Some programs include automatic update options or at least notifiers that inform you of new program updates, while others do not come with that functionality. And even if a program supports it, you often still need to run it before you are informed about the update.

It is up to the individual user to monitor developer websites or download portals for application updates if no automatic updates or notifications are supported natively. Third party tools like AutoUp, or the previously reviewed Software Update Monitoring software, try to aid the user in this task by scanning the system for applications and comparing the installed version with the latest version.

Programs of this kind can only scan for updates for supported applications, which is a severe limitation considering that it is likely that software is installed on the system that is unknown to those program.

AutoUP is a free software for Windows that supports more than 60 different popular applications for Windows. From web browsers like Safari and Opera to programs like ImgBurn, VLC Media Player or Notepad++. Besides the ability to check for software updates, AutoUP can also check for Windows Updates that have not been installed yet on the PC.

You need to select the software applications manually with a click on their checkbox before you click on scan to run a scan for updates. Programs are then classified as up to date, out of date, or as programs with beta version updates. A filter menu is available to only display a particular group of applications, for instance only programs with regular updates.

It is then possible to have the program download the update to the local system. You can alternatively open the developer website manually to download the program this way as it is not really clear where the program gets its downloads from.

The list of scanned applications can be exported into a text file for safe keeping. The Windows updates check is more comfortable, as you only need to click on the scan button to have the program search for updates that are not installed yet on the system. This will include optional updates like Bing Desktop. These updates can be installed from within the program window.

A history is available that lists past scans, information about updates that have been found, and which program updates have been downloaded.

AutoUp is compatible with all recent versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system. It requires the Microsoft. NET Framework 2.0.

Google launches first ChromeOS-based 'Chromebox'

Google and Samsung have announced the launch of the first desktop 'Chromebox' this week.

The Chromebox will cost just $329 and comes in a small case, familiar to past owners of Mac Minis.

Powered by Google's cloud-based ChromeOS operating system, the mini-desktop has an 1.9GHz dual-core Intel Celeron B840 (Sandy Bridge) CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 16GB SSD and WiFi a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0.

With just an 8-inch footprint, the device packs a decent amount of ports including 6 USB ports, a 3.5mm combination headphone / mic jack, DVI output, gigabit Ethernet and two DisplayPort connectors.

Perhaps most notably, the device will run on ChromeOS 19, the latest version of the OS which makes it a lot more usable and Windows-like. Instead of being browser-only like in the past, the new OS update will look more like the traditional Windows systems in terms of app and window management. Finally, boot time is a remarkable 5 seconds.

Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour and his wife were forced to flee their home after an unexploded World War II incendiary device was unearthed nearby.
Their six-storey mansion in East Sussex is midway through extensive renovations, during which builders discovered a 150cm pipe-shaped device which caused alarm.
The area was evacuated and a Navy bomb disposal team were called in. They identified the German weapon and removed it safely. No one was injured.
Gilmour’s wife Polly said via Twitter: “They’ve found a bomb under our building site – we think it’s a bit of old pip but the Ministry of Defence are on their way.”
Later she added: “They’ve taken away our bomb. Incendiary – but missing the bit that makes it go bang.”
Last month more than 30 incendiary bombs were found by a metal-detectorist in a cave in East Yorkshire. In January the medal ceremony at the Winter Youth Olympics in Austria was disrupted after a British WWII bomb was discovered nearby.

Jimmy Page says he’s offended that UK Olympics bosses didn’t ask him to take part in the London event. Organisers have tried and failed to secure a Free reunion and a Sex Pistols set – and even asked the Who if late drummer Keith Moon was available. But they didn’t approach the Led Zeppelin guitarist, who appeared at the Beijing Olympics to promote the London games. “I’m feeling rather hurt,” Page says. “We put so much into Beijing.” [Telegraph]
US President Barrack Obama yesterday presented Bob Dylan with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honour. Obama said: “There is not a bigger giant in the history of American music” and praised Dylan’s work for “not just what music sounded like, but the message it carried and how it made people feel.”
Cult singer Ian Astbury married the Black Ryder singer Aimee Nash in Las Vegas at the weekend. They tied the knot while the Cult were in town as part of their current tour. The paid met when the Black Ryder supported Astbury’s outfit in Australia.
Slash documentary The Cat in the Hat will be released as a double-disc blu-ray set in August. It includes the main feature plus wide-ranging audio interviews with the guitarist, with a running time of 131 minutes.
Burton C Bell of Fear Factory reports ex-bassist Byron Stroud has apologised for remarks he made about why he left the band. Stroud said: “Life’s too short to spend it with people that don’t love and respect you.” Now Bell explains: “Byron apologised for saying whatever he did. He made a personal decision to leave the band and we respect that.” The pair continue to collaborate on their City of Fire project.
Corey Taylor has hinted Slipknot are getting ever closer to recording their first record since the death of bassist Paul Gray in 2010. The frontman tweeted: “To anyone asking, Slipknot is not currently working on an album. Yet. We are putting together demos, but we’re not recording. Yet.” A best-of compilation, Antennas To Hell, is released in July.
VXN, the Vixen offshoot band, have changed their name to JanetShareRoxyGina – or JSRG – to distance themselves from the active lineup of Vixen. It features three former members of the band, Janet Gardner, Share Ross, Roxy Petrucci, plus guitarist Gina Stile. Gardner says: “It feels good to be reunited with Roxy and Share. When we started jamming some old songs with Gina, we knew this was right.”
Bob Geldof believes he could have achieved solo success at the level of Sting or Paul Weller if he hadn’t spearheaded the Live Aid charity concert in 1985. He reflects: “It’s completely damaged my ability to do the thing I love. If it hadn’t happened I would have been able to make the transition from the Boomtown Rats to a solo thing.” [London Evening Standard]
The Hard Rock Cafe has announced its second UK “guitar amnesty”. They’re inviting owners to donate guitars in any condition to be repaired or used for parts, and refurbished instruments will be given to the Barnardo’s charity. Shinedown drummer Barry Kerch believes singer Brent Smith is in best-ever shape after dealing with his drink and drugs issues. Kerch says: “He can breathe now. He can more around the stage and he doesn’t just stand there trying to make it through ha set. It’s improved him as a person, and as a result Shinedown is the strongest it’s been in ten years.”

Geddy Lee formed a new band when Rush fired him in their early days – and he was doing better than they were when he was invited to rejoin.
But he believes the experience was a blessing in disguise because it set them on the road to becoming the band they are today.
The bassist and singer was dismissed long before the Canadian outfit made their first recording. It happened even before they’d become a three-piece. The band’s new manager, Ray Danniels, who is still with them, carried out both the firing and re-hiring.
Lee recounts the story in Classic Rock’s Rush Fan Pack, which includes a copy of the band’s new album Clockwork Angels and is available for pre-order now.
He says: “That was pre-history really. We hadn’t recorded yet and were still in our embryonic stage, and Ray came along. He had no real reputation yet as a manager or anything. He was just kind of an agent working in Toronto.
“So he started directing the band and he just thought I wasn’t suitable, for whatever reasons he had. I don’t know whether it was the way I looked, or my religious background – who the fuck knew?
“Anyway, he influenced them and they went along with it, Alex Lifeson and John Rutsey, and I was out. They kicked me out.”
Rush were still laying the foundations of the band they’d become playing local drop-in centres with Lifeson, Rutsey and Lee’s brother-in-law Lindy Young on piano. After being dropped Lee formed a new outfit and joined them on the low-end live circuit.
“I started a blues band,” he says, “and I was, frankly speaking, doing better than they were. Then I got a call from John and he said, ‘Can we get together?’ Basically, ‘Can you come back? We’re sorry.’
“They had to go through whatever they went through. We tried it again and that’s really when the band started. We became this three-piece and we were really going in the same direction.”

Siren is a flexible freeware file renamer for Windows

If your digital camera is only creating photos like CIMG0282.jpg you may feel the desire to rename those photos once they have been transferred to the PC for easier recognition in the future. While you could place them into properly named directories, you'd end up with the photo names being displayed in some occasions.

When it comes to renaming files you have the professional tools like Bulk Rename Utility which may seem complicated to use at first (check the screenshot), or simpler programs like ReNamer which do not offer that many features but are easier to use because of this.

Siren sits somewhere in the middle. The developer of the file renaming software is currently working on version 3, which has recently been released as a Release Candidate. When you start the portable application after downloading and unpacking it on your system, you will see an interface that looks like the one on the screenshot below.

You use the left sidebar to browser to a folder containing files that you want to rename, and make a selection here with the checkboxes. You can select all files automatically, or select files. If you want, you can also load all files residing in subdirectories into the current root folder (virtually) to process them as well.

If you know your way around the program, you can simply type a new format into the expression field and watch the new name field to check up on the new file name. Every change you make to the format is reflected here right after you hit the return key. If you are new to the program, you have two options to get used to it.

You can first click on the blue button next to the expression field to see a list of all supported variables. Next to standard variables like the file name or extension, are file specific variables like audio or video tags, Exif information when it comes to photos, and even system environment variables like the home directory.

The second option that you have is to use the built-in wizard, the second button in that row, for a visualized process. Here you see the current and new name at the top, and renaming options below that. Everything that you select here is reflected automatically on the same page so that you can verify the new name before you close the wizard.

You have got the option to replace the existing files with the new names, or create copies of the files instead. Siren is a sophisticated file renamer for Windows that leaves little to be desired. If you are currently looking for a renamer, I suggest you try it out. It is compatible with all recent – and not so recent – versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system.
