Filming began on in Toronto on Rob Stefaniuk's vampire horror-comedy Suck this week. The production boasts an impressive cast of rockers like Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Moby, Henry Rollins, Alex Lifeson, Dimitri Coates and Carol Pope. Even Cooper's daughter, Calico, has jumped on board.

Written and directed by Stefaniuk, Suck is about a group of musical wannabees in search of immortality and a record deal. The rock band The Winners have sunk so low, they will do anything to make it big. After a life-changing encounter with a vampire, they rocket to stardom only to discover that fame and fortune are not all they’re cracked up to be.

Stefaniuk (Phil the Alien) stars as the lead singer of The Winners, Jessica Pare (Wicker Park) plays bass and is the first band member to succumb to the blood lust. Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange, Halloween) plays a vampire hunter who is afraid of the dark and Dave Foley (Kids in the Hall) is the band's manager.

Coates, meanwhile, is the vampire who converts the band. Pope will play a club manager, Rollins, a radio show host, and Moby, the lead singer in the rock band Secretaries of Steak. Iggy Pop plays a music producer and Calico is a bar maid alongside Alice Cooper who plays a sinister bartender who haunts the lead singer.

Paul Anthony, Mike Lobel, Chris Ratz, Barbara Mamabolo and Nicole DeBoer co-star.

Suck is being produced by Capri Vision Inc. and Robin Crumley, Jeff Rogers and Victoria Hirst. Gabriella Martinelli (of Capri), Brad Peyton, Terry Markus, and Jeff Sackman are executive producing.

Three years ago we showed you how to send a text message via email to the six major carriers in the US. At the tips and tricks blog MakeUseOf, they've compiled a list of over sixty domestic and international carriers and the corresponding email address formats used for each. In the screenshot to the left, you can see the format for sending a plain text message to a user on the Sprint network:
##########@messaging.sprintpcs.com. Place your friend's phone number in front of the proper provider domain and you're on your way. Remember if you get carried away typing, that your poor friend will be reading it on a tiny phone screen and that some services truncate the length of text messages. Far Cry (5:21)

Pariah dogs and wandering madmen
Barking at strangers and speaking in tongues
The ebb and flow of tidal fortune
Electrical changes are charging up the young

It's a far cry from the world we thought we'd inherit
It's a far cry from the way we thought we'd share it
You can almost feel the current flowing
You can almost see the circuits blowing

One day I feel I'm on top of the world
And the next it's falling in on me
I can get back on
I can get back on
One day I feel I'm ahead of the wheel
And the next it's rolling over me
I can get back on
I can get back on

Whirlwind life of faith and betrayal
Rise in anger, fall back and repeat
Slow degrees on the dark horizon
Full moon rising, lays silver at your feet

You can almost see the circle growing
You can almost feel the planet glowing

One day I fly through a crack in the sky
And the next it's falling in on me
I can get back on
I can get back on

Armor and Sword (6:36)

The snakes and arrows a child is heir to
Are enough to leave a thousand cuts
We build our defenses, a place of safety
And leave the darker places unexplored

Sometimes the fortress is too strong
Or the love is too weak
What should have been our armor
Becomes a sharp and angry sword

Our better natures seek elevation
A refuge for the coming night
No one gets to their heaven without a fight

We hold beliefs as a consolation
A way to take us out of ourselves
Meditation, or medication
A comfort, or a promised reward

Sometimes that spirit is too strong
Or the flesh is too weak
Sometimes the need is just too great
For the solace we seek
The suit of shining armor
Becomes a keen and bloody sword

A refuge for the coming night
A future of eternal light
No one gets to their heaven without a fight

Confused alarms of struggle and flight
Blood is drained of color
By the flashes of artillery light
No one gets to their heaven without a fight
The battle flags are flown
At the feet of a god unknown
No one gets to their heaven without a fight

Sometimes the damage is too great
Or the will is too weak
What should have been our armor
Becomes a sharp and burning sword

Workin' Them Angels (4:47)

Driving away to the east, and into the past
History receeds in my rear-view mirror
Carried away on a wave of music down a desert road
Memory humming at the heart of a factory town

All my life
I've been workin' them angels overtime
Riding and driving and living
So close to the edge
Workin' them angels - Overtime

Riding through the Range of Light to the wounded city
Filling my spirit with the wildest wish to fly
Taking the high road to the wounded city
Memory strumming at the heart of a moving picture

All this time
I've been workin' them angels overtime
Riding and driving and flying
Just over the edge
Workin' them angels - Overtime

Driving down the razor's edge between the past and the future
Turn up the music and smile
Get carried away on the songs and stories of vanished times
Memory drumming at the heart of an English winter
Memories beating at the heart of an African village

The Larger Bowl (4:07)

(a pantoum)

if we're so much the same, like I always hear
why such different fortunes and fates?
some of us live in a cloud of fear
some live behind iron gates

why such different fortunes and fates?
some are blessed and some are cursed
some live behind iron gates
while others see only the worst

some are blessed and some are cursed
the golden one or scarred from birth
while others only see the worst
such a lot of pain on the earth

the golden one or scarred from birth
somethings can never be changed
such a lot of pain on this earth
It's somehow so badly arranged

some things can never be changed
some reasons will never come clear
it's somehow so badly arranged
if we're so much the same like I always hear

Spindrift (5:24)

As the waves crash in
On the western shore
The wind blows fierce from the east
Wavetops torn into flying spindrift

As the waves crash in
On the western shore
It makes me feel uneasy
The spray that's torn away
Is an image of the way I feel

What am I supposed to say?
Where are the words to answer you
When you talk that way?

As sun goes down
On the western shore
The wind blows hard from the east
It whips the sand into a flying spindrift

As the sun goes down
On the western shore
It makes me feel uneasy
In the hot dry rasp of the devil winds
Who cares what a fool believes?

What am I supposed to say?
Where are the words to answer you
When you talk that way?
Words that fly against the wind and waves

(A little closer to you)
Where is the wave that will carry me
A little closer to you?

What am I suppose to do?
Where are the words that will make you see
What I believe is true?

The Main Monkey Business (instrumental 6:01)
The Way The Wind Blows (6:28)

Now it's come to this
It's like we're back in the Dark Ages
From the Middle East to the Middle West
It's a world of superstition

Now it's come to this
Wide-eyed armies of the faithful
From the Middle East to the Middle West
Pray, and pass the ammunition

So many people think that way
You gotta watch what you say
To them and them, and others too
Who don't seem to see to things the way you do

We can only grow the way the wind blows
On a bare and weathered shore
We can only bow to the here and now
In our elemental war

We can only go the way the wind blows
We can only bow to the here and now
Or be broken down blow by blow

Now it's come to this
Hollow speeches of mass deception
From the Middle East to the Middle West
Like crusaders in unholy alliance

Now it's come to this
Like we're back in the Dark Ages
From the Middle East to the Middle West
It's a plague that resists all science

It seems to leave them partly blind
And they leave no child behind
While evil spirits haunt their sleep
While shepherds bless and count their sheep

Like the solitary pine
On a bare wind-blasted shore
We can only grow the way the wind blows

Hope (instrumental 2:02)
Faithless (5:31)

I've got my own moral compass to steer by
A guiding star beats a spirit in the sky
And all the preaching voices -
Empty vessels ring so loud
As they move among the crowd
Fools and thieves are well disguised
In the temple and market place

Like a stone in the river
Against the floods of spring
I will quietly resist

Like the willows in the wind
Or the cliffs along the ocean
I will quietly resist

I don't have faith in faith
I don't believe in belief
You can call me faithless
But I still cling to hope
And I believe in love
And that's faith enough for me

I've got my own spirit level for balance
To tell if my choice is leaning up or down
And all the shouting voices
Try to throw me off my course
Some by sermons, some by force
Fools and thieves are dangerous
In the temple and marketplace

Like a forest bows to winter
Beneath the deep white silence
I will quietly resist

Like a flower in the desert
That only blooms at night
I will quietly resist

Bravest Face (5:12)

Though we might have precious little
It's still precious

I like that song
About this wonderful world
It's got a sunny point of view
And sometimes I feel it's true
At least for a few of us

I like that world
It makes a wonderful song
But there's a darker point of view
That's sadly just as true
For so many among us

In the sweetest child there's a vicious streak
In the strongest man there's a child so weak
In the whole wide world there's no magic place
So you might as well rise, put on your bravest face

I like that show
Where they solve all the murders
That heroic point of view
It's got justice and vengeance too
At least, so the story goes

I like that story -
Makes a satisfying case
But there's a messy point of view
That's sadly just as true
For so many among us

In softest voice there's an acid tongue
In the oldest eyes there's a soul so young
In the shakiest will there's a core of steel
On the smoothest ride there's a squeaky wheel

Though we might have precious little
It's still precious

Good News First (4:51)

The best we can agree on
Is it could have been worse
What happened to your old
Benevolent universe?
You know the one with stars
That revolve around you
Beaming down full of promises
To bring good news

You used to feel that way
The saddest words you could ever say
But I know you'll remember that day
And the most beautiful words I could ever say

The worst thing about it all
Is that you might have been right
And I'm still not really sure
What started that fight
But I still get this feeling
There's more trouble ahead
So never mind the bad news
Let's have the good news instead

Some would said they never fear a thing
Well I do
And I'm afraid enough for both of us -
For me and you
Time, if nothing else, will do it's worst
So do me that favor
And tell me the good news first

Malignant Narcissism (instrumental 2:17)

"Usually a case of malignant narcissism brought on during childhood."

We Hold On (4:13)

How many times
Do we tire of all the little battles
Threaten to call it quits
Tempted to cut and run

How many times
Do we weather out the stormy evenings
Long to slam the front door
Drive away into the setting sun

Keep going until dawn
How many times must another line be drawn
We could be down and gone
But we hold on

How many times
Do we chafe against the repetition
Straining against a fate
Measured out in coffee breaks

How many times
Do we swallow our ambition
Long to give up the same old way
Find another road to take

Keep holding on so long
'Cause there's a chance
that we might not be so wrong
We could be down and gone
But we hold on

How many times
Do we wonder if it's even worth it
There's got to be some other way
To get me through the day

But we hold on

Hear the rime of the ancient mariner

Hear the rime of the ancient mariner
See his eye as he stops one of three
Mesmerises one of the wedding guests
Stay here and listen to the nightmares of the sea.
And the music plays on, as the bride passes by
Caught by his spell and the mariner tells his tale.
Driven south to the land of the snow and ice
To a place where nobody's been
Through the snow fog flies on the albatross
Hailed in God's name, hoping good luck it brings.
And the ship sails on, back to the North
Through the fog and ice and the albatross follows on.
The mariner kills the bird of good omen
His shipmates cry against what he's done
But when the fog clears, they justify him
And make themselves a part of the crime.
Sailing on and on and north across the sea
Sailing on and on and north 'til all is calm.
The albatross begins with its vengeance
A terrible curse a thirst has begun
His shipmates blame bad luck on the mariner
About his neck, the dead bird is hung.
And the curse goes on and on at sea
And the thirst goes on and on for them and me.
"Day after day, day after day,
we stuck nor breath nor motion
as idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean
Water, water everywhere and
all the boards did shrink
Water, water everywhere nor any drop to drink."
There calls the mariner
There comes a ship over the line
But how can she sail with no wind in her sails and no tide.
See...onward she comes
Onward she nears out of the sun
See, she has no crew
She has no life, wait but there's two.
Death and she Life in Death,
They throw their dice for the crew
She wins the mariner and he belongs to her now.
Then...crew one by one
they drop down dead, two hundred men
She...she, Life in Death.
She lets him live, her chosen one.
"One after one by the star dogged moon,
too quick for groan or sigh
each turned his face with a ghastly pang
and cursed me with his eye
four times fifty living men
(and I heard nor sigh nor groan)
with heavy thump, a lifeless lump,
they dropped down one by one."
The curse it lives on in their eyes
The mariner he wished he'd die
Along with the sea creatures
But they lived on, so did he.
And by the light of the moon
He prays for their beauty not doom
With heart he blesses them
God's creatures all of them too.
Then the spell starts to break
The albatross falls from his neck
Sinks down like lead into the sea
Then down in falls comes the rain.
Hear the groans of the long dead seamen
See them stir and they start to rise
Bodies lifted by good spirits
None of them spake and they're lifeless in their eyes
And revenge is still sought, penance starts again
Cast into a trance and the nightmare carries on.
Now the curse is finally lifted
And the mariner sights his home
spirits go from the long dead bodies
Form their own light and the mariner's left alone.
And then a boat came sailing towards him
It was a joy he could not believe
The pilot's boat, his son and the hermit,
Penance of life will fall onto him.
And the ship it sinks like lead into the sea
And the hermit shrieves the mariner of his sins.
The mariner's bound to tell of his story
To tell this tale wherever he goes
To teach God's word by his own example
That we must love all things that God made.
And the wedding guest's a sad and wiser man
And the tale goes on and on and on.

RUSH ALEX LIFESON ON PERFORMANCE ON SNAKES DVD
RUSH ALEX LIFESON ON WHATS THAT SMELL

Rush.jpg

Rush will be releasing their Snakes And Arrows Live DVD, and it follows in the footsteps of their two previous DVD's this decade, Rush In Rio and R-30. The collection features fan favorites from their catalogue such as "Tom Sawyer," "Freewill," and "Subdivisions," plus Snakes and Arrows favorites "Malignant Narcissism," "Spindrift," and "Far Cry."
Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson phoned in from a studio in Toronto, and he said the Snakes And Arrows Live DVD offers the greatest insight into their musicality and musical connection compared to the two previous DVD collections.
"Yeah, and this one really is about the performance. It's about the interplay amongst the three of us; how we play, how we sound, and how we are presented. In the past some of our DVDs have been about different aspects of our show. For example Rush In Rio that we did in 2001, in obviously Rio De Janiero, was really about the event. It was a huge crowd in a big soccer stadium. It was really about that energy and the band where this is something pure about the performance."
Rush also gives fans the insight into their "alternative" personas for the "What's That Smell" comedy vignette, that signaled the start of their second set. Alex Lifeson said that they enjoy it and it allows the fans to get to know Rush a little bit better.
"It connects us with our fans more. It all becomes part of the Rush family. Rather than bringing in actors or some other people to do these little bits that give you some kind of flow visually in the show. When we do it, it's more of an effort on the part of the band. It's more genuine. I think Rush fans like to see us goofing around and see that we're not particularly serious about most things in our life. We take our music seriously, we take our performance seriously, we want to do the best that we can, but we're not serious people. This is really one way where we're able to show this side of the band, and I think Rush fans really enjoy it. I know we do. As you can see by the outtakes in 'What's That Smell' that we're just having a riot doing that stuff. So, we hope to continue with that."
Rush's Snakes And Arrows Live DVD was filmed over a two night span in the Netherlands in October of 2007 in high definition. Additional footage for the three disc set was filmed in Standard Definition in Atlanta in July of 2008.

Subject: The Pin Clock Makes Watching Time Tick by Fun [Stuff We Like]

A big part of staying productive is keeping track of time, how much and on what you spend it—so why not make glancing at the clock as fun as possible? The Pin Clock is a nifty digital clock that pushes out pins to display its numbers (like that pin toy thing you used to stick your face into as a kid). Ok fine, we're no gadget blog, and the whole "keeping track of time" spin is probably a reach—but we just couldn't resist this one. The Pin Clock will set you back $60 at Amazon.

The New Windows Taskbar in Windows 7

In Windows 7, we're introducing a brand new Windows Taskbar. I touched upon this briefly in my notes from the PDC Keynote a few weeks ago. However last Thursday, the Windows Engineering Team over on the Engineering Windows 7 Blog published a much more in-depth look at the new Windows Taskbar in Windows 7. They take a close look several new features within the new Taskbar including Jump Lists, Pinning, Interactive Grouped Thumbnails, Aero Peek, and Color Hot Track. The overall goal behind the new Windows Taskbar is to allow people to be able to manage their application windows much easier as well as give them quick access to the information they need.

If you are interested in getting a "sneak-peek" at what's coming for UI changes in Windows 7 specific to the Taskbar - definitely give this post a read.

WWT: Explore The Universe With WALL•E And Andrew Stanton

Microsoft Research teamed up with Disney•Pixar and created a virtual tour of the universe hosted by none other then……WALL•E!
WALL•E is assisted by award winning director Andrew Stanton, who narrates this tour.

“Using Microsoft’s WorldWide Telescope, WALL•E takes you on a real ride through space,” Stanton said. “After watching the movie on DVD, the whole family will be inspired to learn more about the world in which we live and the universe beyond.”

WWT-Wall-E

WorldWide Telescope is a rich Web application that brings together imagery from the best ground- and space-based observatories across the world to allow people to easily explore the night sky through their computers. WorldWide Telescope has been embraced by the astronomical and education communities as a compelling, astronomical resource for students and lifelong learners.

“WorldWide Telescope is about making science fun for everyone,” said Curtis Wong, manager of Microsoft’s Next Media Research Group. “By working with Disney•Pixar, we’re enabling kids and families to discover the magic of the universe for themselves in an even more engaging way. What could be more fun than exploring space with a famous robot?”

He’s right, I watched the tour and learned from it, seeing WALL•E float around in it is an extra bonus. I mean come on, who doesn’t like this robot? You can go watch it too at http://www.worldwidetelescope.org. You will need to install WorldWide Telescope to watch the tour.

A teaser of this tour can also be seen on the DVD and Blu-ray Disc. Nice!
