An Intimate Interview with Geddy Lee of Rush

Tidings, Canada’s only national food and wine publication, has published an interview/article with Geddy Lee where the discussion centers around Geddy's love of wine, the band's recent involvement in the Grapes of Humanity Charity and more.

Tidings: One thing I’ve noticed is that, given your love of wine and Alex’s love of wine, I don’t notice any wine references in your songs. Since Neil is the lyricist, can I assume that he’s not a wine buff?

Lee: He loves wine and he loves food. He’s not as mental as I am, but he’s always happy to come out and eat and drink with us. He also loves to cook. But he’s got so many interests I don’t know if he would have room to become a serious wine nut.

Microsoft's SUR40 Surface shipping in early 2012 for $8400

Samsung has put the Microsoft Surface SUR40 up for pre-order on their website. The second-generation Surface device is less bulky than the original and features a 40-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass.

The 4-inch thin device is powered by an AMD Athlon II X2 dual-core processor that operates at 2.9GHz alongside an AMD HD6750M GPU with DirectX 11 support. Additional hardware includes a 320GB hard drive, 4GB of DDR3 memory, 100 / 1000 Ethernet and a Realtek audio chip, all running Windows 7 Professional x64. Average power consumption is listed at 200 watts. The display can track more than 50 simultaneous touch points thanks to a technology called PixelSense.

Owners can configure the SUR40 in a number of different ways – using it as a table, hanging it on the wall with the VESA mount or embedding it into a wall or custom enclosure.

Microsoft’s original Surface was announced in 2007 and reached the first set of customers in 2008. Those customers typically include business partners with optimal use found in hospitality environments like restaurants, hotels, retail and public entertainment venues. Notable appearances include MSNBC using the Surface during the 2008 US presidential election and on EXTRA! Entertainment news.

Microsoft first demoed the SUR40 at the 2011 CES in January but had to delay the release for a full year as they worked to correct software issues. It is currently available for pre-order in 23 different countries including the US and is expected to ship early next year for $8,400.

Awesome View From Space Time-Lapse onboard the International Space Station

Be sure to turn ‘HD’ on if your computer can handle it and for me it played smother by keeping it paused until fully loaded.

Time lapse sequences of photographs taken by the crew of expeditions
28 & 29 onboard the International Space Station from August to October,
2011, who to my knowledge shot these pictures at an altitude of around 350 km.
All credit goes to them. I intend to upload a FullHD-version presently.

HD, refurbished, smoothed, retimed, denoised, deflickered, cut, etc.
All in all I tried to keep the looks of the material as original as possible,
avoided adjusting the colors and the like, since in my opinion the original
footage itself already has an almost surreal and aestethical visual nature.

Geezer Butler, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward of Black Sabbath are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

As expected, the four original members of Black Sabbath – Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward – announced today they will reunite and tour in 2012, including a headlining set at the Download Festival in June. The surprise news was that the reunion will include a new album, produced by Rick Rubin, due next fall.

Host Henry Rollins, who introduced himself at the famed Whisky A Go Go on the Sunset Strip as the "press liaison," talked about the impact of the band, both generally and in his own life.

"I was a very alienated young person," Rollins said, "and when I heard Black Sabbath I realized my life had a soundtrack. I realized there were people out there using music to make great statements. When I heard 'Iron Man,' high school became powerless over me. This is true outsider music."

Then Rollins brought Rubin and the four Sabbath bandmates to the Whisky stage, where they'd played 41 years earlier to the day. Rollins hosted a Q&A before the band answered questions from the assembled press corps.

"Why now?" Rollins began. Osbourne summed it up: "It's just time," he said. Those sentiments were echoed by Iommi, who said, "It’s now or never. We get along great. Everything’s really good."

The band also credited Rubin's persistence for helping get them back in the studio. "He phoned us every five minutes," Iommi joked.

"I’ve known Rick for many years," Osbourne added. "He wanted to do it a long time ago."

With the album and tour not due until next fall, it's clearly early in the process. But the quartet has begun rehearsing. Rubin said it sounds like the four guys in Black Sabbath getting together and playing, and Butler agreed.

"It’s really back to the old Sabbath style and sound," he said.
