Patrick Stewart, most affectionately known by the geek
community as either Capt. Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation
or Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films, was knighted by
Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday.
Also a celebrated stage actor, Stewart has long been one of Britain’s most
recognizable talents. Said the actor of his newfound Knighthood, “my heroes were
Sir Laurence Olivier, Sir John Gielgud, Sir Alec Guinness.” Being “in that
company is the grandest thing that has professionally happened to me.”
The 69-year old actor first joined Britain’s storied Royal Shakespeare
Company in his 20s, and has been lighting up stage and screen ever since. Though
lets face it, he’ll always be that other guy who captained the USS Enterprise to
us, right?
