A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin - Winter Is Coming comic book

ross-thrones1

Every week I’ll be bringing you a comic book cover that I feel eclipses others out there—to the point I might just have to own it!

The BadAss Cover for this week is for A Game of Thrones #1. A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin is one of the most celebrated fantasy novels of all time. The fans have made it so. With the HBO treatment, more fans are flocking to the series than ever before and they are becoming the raving fanboys and girls that George deserves.

That said, with any successful property, there are many means of telling the same story and A Game of Thrones is now going to get the comic book treatment. I’m exceedingly pleased with this. Comic books, in my opinion, gather up what is best about movies and prose books to become wholly unique. I’m excited about the comic book adaptation of Thrones because:

  • Overseen by George R. R. Martin

  • Adapted by GRRM friend and helluva writer Daniel Abraham

  • Painted cover art supplied by the best in the business, Alex Ross

  • Mike Miller, The Hedge Knight artist, supplying variant art

  • Abraham on artist Tommy Patterson: “Glad we have him now before he takes the industry by storm.”

As for this cover, it’s badass! Why? It’s an Alex Ross cover for one, which almost intrinsically means I love it. It also features aspects of the HBO show fans felt were lacking in appearance—the direwolves. Looks like Ross is a fan because I can distinctly pick out each one of the direwolves based on the book. Based on the fur around his neck, the man must be Eddard Stark, the character the novel hinges around. I also really like the literary allusion to his children around him, those children being the driving force of the narrative in the series.

Here is a bit more about A Game of Thrones #1:

George R.R. Martin has been called “the American Tolkien” by Time Magazine, and now his landmark fantasy series is being adapted to a graphic format, starting with the first book of the series: A Game of Thrones. The premiere issue introduces readers to George’s world, adapting the prologue and first three chapters of the novel, and bringing onto the graphic stage such iconic characters as Eddard and Catelyn Stark, Jon Snow, young Bran Stark, and Daenerys Targaryen. This novel has also been adapted as a major miniseries by HBO – with HBO’s highest ratings to date, since having premiered on April 17, 2011!

A Game of Thrones #1 will hit comic book stores in September!
