Every week, I’ll be bringing you a comic book cover that I feel eclipses others out there—to the point I might just have to own it!
The BadAss Comic Book Cover for this week is for Batman #6. Batman has been getting his ass handed him for six issues. The Court of Owls have laid an incredible trap for the Dark Knight, driving Bruce Wayne to the brink of madness and despair. Is it all hallucination? Or is this real? Batman is about to have a psychotic break with reality, I think, one that might drive Batman from Gotham and into hiding. This is done by a team effort though in writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo.
Why do I love this cover though? It’s different. The Court of Owls has infiltrated Batman, driving him slowly insane. You can see Batman in this image but he’s been twisted, made unreal. The image of the owl has overtaken the bat and I love how you can see both within Batman. It’s also a dark piece, macabre. It’s a signature of Greg Capullo. After working on Spawn for so long, some of that darkness must creep into other art. Is Batman hooting? Is he screaming? Is he screaming at what is being done to his body? Will he continue to metamorphosize until the bat is gone? This artwork opens up more questions than answers—which makes a great cover!
