As expected, prog-rockers Rush will return with their first album in five years this spring. On Wednesday, the Canadian trio behind hits like "Tom Sawyer" revealed that their 19th album, Clockwork Angels, will be released June 12.
The album opens with two singles released in 2010, "Caravan" and "BU2B," and features new single "Headlong Fight," which will be serviced to radio on April 19. Clockwork Angels is the follow-up to 2007′s Snakes & Arrows, and finds them reuniting with that album's co-producer, Nick Raskulinecz, as well as co-producing themselves. It was recorded in Nashville and Toronto.
According to a press release from the band, the album is a conceptual one that "chronicles a young man's quest across a lavish and colorful world of steampunk and alchemy as he attempts to follow his dreams. The story features lost cities, pirates, anarchists, an exotic carnival, and a rigid watchmaker who imposes precision on every aspect of daily life." And the fantasy doesn't stop there: Drummer and lyricist Neil Peart is working with science fiction author Kevin J. Anderson to pen a novelization of Clockwork Angels.
The album's release also marks the beginning of its relationship with Roadrunner Records, where Rush signed in August after a six-album stay at Atlantic Records.
As for the delay on this new Rush album, traveling the world on the Time Machine tour kept the band on the road from 2010-2011 — and saw Geddy Lee and co. previewing songs off Clockwork Angels.
